| TOURISM BOOM |

(AS REPORTED BY RUCHI CHALLU OF TIMES OF INDIA, MONDAY 20 AUGUST 2007)
’
Indian tourism industry is growing by leap and bounds evident from the fact
that it contributed 5.9 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product in year
2006.
Driven by a surge in business traveler arrivals and a soaring interest in
India as a tourist destination, the importance of tourism for the Indian
economy is evident from the fact that it contributed to 5.9 per cent of the
Gross Domestic Product and provided employment to 41.8 million people in
year 2006. This not only reflects the potential of this sector but is also
an indicator of the amount of employment it is likely to generate in the
coming years.
A fairly wide industry, it includes Government tourism departments, travel
agencies, Immigration and customs services, airlines, tour operators,
hotels and many associated service industries like airline catering or
laundry services, Guides, Interpreters, Tourism promotion and sales etc
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) estimates a 4.5 per cent per
annum increase in the total amount of travel and tourism economic activity
between 2002 and 2012. This largely attributed to a rise in global wealth,
liberalization of international airspace, cheaper flights and the use of
the internet as a travel tool,” says Sunil Gupta, COO, SOTC & Kuoni
Holidays.
