TOURISM BOOM TIME IN INDIA
(As
reported by Ruchi Challu of Times of India, Monday 20 August
2007))
’Indian
tourism industry is growing by leap and bounds evident from
the fact that it contributed 5.9 per cent of the Gross Domestic
Product in year 2006.
Driven
by a surge in business traveler arrivals and a soaring interest
in India as a tourist destination, the importance of tourism
for the Indian economy is evident from the fact that it
contributed to 5.9 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product
and provided employment to 41.8 million people in year 2006.
This not only reflects the potential of this sector but
is also an indicator of the amount of employment it is likely
to generate in the coming years.
A
fairly wide industry, it includes Government tourism departments,
travel agencies, Immigration and customs services, airlines,
tour operators, hotels and many associated service industries
like airline catering or laundry services, Guides, Interpreters,
Tourism promotion and sales etc
“The
World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) estimates a 4.5
per cent per annum increase in the total amount of travel
and tourism economic activity between 2002 and 2012. This
largely attributed to a rise in global wealth, liberalization
of international airspace, cheaper flights and the use of
the internet as a travel tool,” says Sunil Gupta,
COO, SOTC & Kuoni Holidays.
THE
JOB MARKET
Work
in the travel and tourism industry is essentially concerned
with providing services for people who are away from home,
on business or holiday. Work at every functional level in
the industry involves dealing directly with people. Travel
agent assesses the needs of tourists and businessmen and
helps them make the best possible travel arrangements from
the many travel options available. Thus, travel company
personnel must be up-to-date on current rules and regulations
and documentation required, in
areas like cargo, ticketing and passports, visas etc. so
as to correctly advise their clients and to take care of
the paperwork when necessary.
Skill
set for people wanting to join this industry are what any
other
industry would need – dedication, hard work and willingness
to work for long hours. By means of education, people need
to be graduates and a diploma or PG in travel and tourism
helps, but is not a restrictive factor today
Tourism
industry, like every other one in India, is expanding at
an enormous rate. Irrespective of the technology replacing
man-power, this is still very much a relationship oriented
business and man-power is in heavy demand. “The biggest
plague to hit this market today is the supply of skilled
professionals vs. the demand.
Jobs
in the travel and tourism industry offer good remuneration
and perks, which include free travel for employees and their
families. For a fresh certificate holder, the remunerations
ranges from Rs.8,000 to Rs.12,000 monthly. Further on, it
gets determined purely on the basis of
functionality, the person’s abilities and the labor
demand supply forces. The salary ranges on basis of year
of work experience in the industry is as follows: ( Per
annum)
2-3
years: Rs.2.5 to Rs.3.0 Lacs;
4-6 years: Rs.5.0 to 7.0 Lacs;
9+ years: Rs.10 to 15 Lacs.’
TOURISM & HOTEL INDUSTRY ANALYSIS IN INDIA &
NCR
Hotel
accommodation in India is proving to be desperately inadequate
to cater to the increased demand due to an increased tourist
influx as well as a higher rate of business travel with
the general upturn in the economy.
The
phenomenal growth of travelers mean that there is a requirement
of approximately 100,000 new hotel rooms in the country
but only 75% of the which will be met by the projects that
are currently underway pronounces the report. The study
further says that the present availability of 100,000 hotel
rooms across all categories in the country is abysmally
low compared
to other countries of the world – China has ten times
more and the United States has forty times more hotel rooms.
The gap indicates that the hotel sector has not been able
to keep pace with the economic growth leading to a gap in
the demand and supply of quality hotel rooms.
Scenario
in NCR (National Capital Region)
Heritage
tourism, Adventure tourism, Eco tourism and increasing business
trips by the corporate executives have led to a surge in
the number of tourists in the national capital region. Delhi
being the hub of most modern medical facilities in the country,
the coming days would see a rise in the number of medical
tourists in the capital. The report goes on to say that
the Medical projects of Gurgaon would make the entire region
a global health care destination giving further boost to
the demand for hotel rooms.
The
upcoming Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in 2010
would further lead to an inflow of around 0.8 million international
tourists and 1.6 million domestic tourists. To accommodate
these visitors approximately 30,000 rooms will be required
in 2010.
This
surge in demand for hotel rooms and that it is here to stay
can be gauged from the fact that the occupancy rates in
NCR has been in steady rise. The occupancy rates rose from
70% to 78% between 2003 and 2005 and is
83% at present. Also the average room rate (ARR) in the
region has increased from Rs.4200 in 2003 to Rs.5200 in
2004. However, the ARR is expected to grow manifold and
touch Rs.10,000 by end 2007, the report says
Though
the current room inventory in all categories in NCR is around
9,982 of which the premium category hotels contribute around
85% or 8532 rooms, yet it is expected to see many new hotels,
service apartments and mixed use developments over the next
3-4 years.
The
report further says that the NCR is expected to see many
new hotels, service apartments, and mixed use developments
over the 3-4 years. Around 25 hotel projects are coming
up in Gurgaon and Noida has 24 hotel projects on the anvil.
In the coming years, supply of hotel rooms in NCR will be
in excess of 17,500. Of these around 5100 are currently
under construction and the rest in planning stages at various
locations around the region.
The
NCR will also see a rise in the number of serviced apartments.
The Knight Frank Research estimates that by the end of year
2008 around 1000 service apartments will be available in
the NCR.
The
report predicts a favorable scenario for the hotel industry
in NCR. Banking upon favorable government policies, the
advent of Metro rail, and improving infrastructure it says
the movement of tourists is here to improve and arrival
of international players in the sector would take the hotel
industry towards global standards.
Delhi
and NCR being the supply tank of tourists, this inflow is
expected to travel through out India to explore its heritage
and culture. This kind of tourist inflow will in turn drive
the requirement for more & more hotels and quality rooms
and trained manpower all over the country. |
